The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in almost 250 postcode areas across England and Wales today. This action coincides with the Met Office’s issuance of multiple winter weather warnings for the upcoming week. Approximately 500,000 households are set to benefit from the payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.

The Cold Weather Payments have been initiated in 246 postcode areas today, encompassing regions such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, as well as parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. Eligible postcodes for the payments can be found on an interactive map.

These payments are directed to individuals in England and Wales who are recipients of various benefits. A similar program operates in Northern Ireland, while in Scotland, support for heating bills is provided annually without being tied to specific cold weather periods.

To date this winter, £25 payments have been activated for 697 postcode areas, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to extended cold conditions. The latest round of payments is anticipated to reach around 532,000 households, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for approximately 336,000 recipients. The total cost of today’s Cold Weather Payments is estimated at £13.3 million.

In England and Wales, a payment is triggered when an area is forecasted to experience temperatures below zero for seven consecutive days. Forecasters are predicting a cold spell leading into the New Year with subzero temperatures expected in many regions.

An estimated 3.9 million individuals qualify for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million of them receiving Pensions Credit. Those receiving benefits like Pension Credit, Income Support, and Universal Credit may be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment. Criteria for eligibility can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Payments of £25 are disbursed directly to recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days. Recipients can identify the payment with a reference including their National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. Applications are not required for this payment.
