A tragic incident occurred when a 19-year-old young man became paralyzed for eight years after accepting a dare from friends, ultimately leading to his untimely death.
During a casual gathering in the backyard of his family’s residence, Sam Ballard and his companions noticed a slug passing by. In a moment of jest, the group challenged Sam to consume the slug as a dare.
One of Sam’s close friends, Jimmy Galvin, recounted the evening, describing it as a casual wine appreciation gathering where the idea of eating the slug arose, leading Sam to accept the challenge without hesitation.
Following that ill-fated night in 2010, Sam began experiencing leg pains, attributing it to consuming the slug. Despite initial doubts from his mother, Katie, about the slug being the cause, it was later revealed that the slug was infected with rat lungworm, a parasite that affects the brain and spinal cord.
Subsequently, Sam from Sydney suffered from severe weakness and leg pain, developing a form of meningitis called eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. This condition resulted in a 420-day coma, after which he awoke to find himself quadriplegic, requiring constant care for daily activities.
Formerly an active rugby player, Sam spent his remaining years confined to a wheelchair before his passing at the age of 28 in November 2018, surrounded by loved ones, with his final words expressing love to his mother.
Katie, who devotedly cared for Sam post-coma, expressed forgiveness towards his friends involved in the dare, highlighting that they were merely enjoying each other’s company that night.
In a poignant recollection, a party attendee shared Sam’s last words before the slug consumption, urging caution and care among friends to prevent tragic consequences, emphasizing the importance of looking out for one another in all situations.
