In the Davis Cup final, the second singles match faced an unexpected interruption when a spectator in the stands fell ill. Flavio Cobolli of Italy was in the midst of a crucial point against Jaume Munar when the incident occurred.
Munar had dominated the first set with a 6-1 victory and was leading in the second set as Cobolli tried to stage a comeback. However, the match came to a halt as medical assistance was summoned to attend to the unwell spectator, prompting both players to pause and return to their benches.
Commentator Arvind Parmar commended Cobolli for his swift response, noting the crowd’s alertness and support. The situation in the stands was described as calm, with officials and first aid responders assisting the individual in need.
During the break, umpire Marijana Veljovic held discussions with the players, while Italian captain Filippo Volandri offered guidance to Cobolli. As the spectator was escorted out of the stands, Parmar mentioned a potential delay in the match as the person was attended to.
The delay lasted approximately ten minutes before play resumed. Cobolli managed to break Munar’s serve, leveling the second set at 1-1. Italy held a 1-0 lead in the overall match, following Matteo Berrettini’s victory over Pablo Carreno Busta. A win for Cobolli would secure Italy’s third consecutive tournament victory, a feat not achieved since 1972 by the USA.
However, a win for Munar would force the match into a decisive doubles round. Both teams were missing key players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who had withdrawn before the final began.
