A 56-year-old woman tragically lost her life in a shark attack while vacationing, where witnesses discovered her injured and bleeding profusely from a severed arm.

The incident involving Arlene Lillis occurred as she was swimming off the coast of the US Virgin Islands, prompting nearby beach attendees to respond to her distress cries and visible blood loss.

Following the shark encounter, Lillis was found missing part of her arm below the elbow and in a critical state. Two brave individuals rescued her from the water, providing immediate aid by creating a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding.

Rescuer Christopher Carroll recalled comforting Lillis while she was conscious but in distress, with another helper, Ryan Connot, sharing that she managed to convey her identity before expressing fears of not surviving. Despite efforts to save her, Lillis succumbed to her injuries due to significant blood loss.

A neighbor described Lillis as a caring mother with a vibrant personality, originally from Minnesota, who had a deep affection for animals and enjoyed outdoor activities like hiking and snorkeling.

Authorities responded swiftly to the attack near the shores of western St. Croix, with emergency crews working diligently to assist Lillis. Despite being rushed to a local hospital for treatment, she unfortunately passed away from the severe injuries sustained during the encounter.

While the specific shark species responsible remains unconfirmed, officials noted the rarity of shark attacks in the US Virgin Islands, emphasizing that such incidents are infrequent despite common shark sightings in the region.

Efforts are underway to enhance safety measures and awareness regarding wildlife encounters at local beaches and hotels following the tragic incident. Investigations into the circumstances leading to the shark encounter continue, with plans to bolster informational resources for public safety.

Recent data indicates a total of 79 unprovoked shark attacks in the Caribbean since 1749, including four incidents in the US Virgin Islands, underscoring the need for ongoing vigilance and precautionary measures.
