The Budget had been casting a shadow over Westminster for an extended period.

However, on Wednesday evening, a gathering of MPs, ministers, and Government aides convened at Parliament’s Strangers Bar to mark the occasion. A minister remarked, “It’s a positive day, and we should acknowledge and embrace such moments.”

Labour has faced challenges lately, with concerns about Keir Starmer’s leadership, internal discontent, and declining poll numbers. Despite a turbulent lead-up and the unexpected disclosure of crucial details by the watchdog, the Chancellor presented a Budget that offers hope to financially strained households.

Labour MPs welcomed the measures aimed at aiding struggling families, such as the removal of the two-child benefit cap, anticipated to uplift 450,000 children out of poverty. Despite anticipated criticism from conservative quarters regarding the Chancellor’s £26 billion tax initiative, they expressed confidence in the Budget.

According to a Mirror interview with one MP, addressing child poverty remains a core objective for the Labour Party. While facing opposing views from the Tories and Reform, the party found pride in its stance.

The Budget emphasized stabilizing public finances and ensuring market stability. While it seemed to proceed smoothly, a dispute arose regarding Ms. Reeves potentially misrepresenting the extent of the fiscal deficit.

The Government aimed to mend relations with its MPs and dispel uncertainties about the PM and Chancellor’s futures, achieving temporary success. Responding to inquiries about the post-Budget scenario, another MP remarked, “Yes, their positions are secure, for now.”

Reactions from backbenchers were largely positive, with one highlighting the Budget’s appeal to both left and right factions. Praise was given for the Chancellor’s alignment with socialist principles, resonating well with the MPs.

Sharon Hodgson, MP for Washington and Gateshead South, commended the Budget as a testament to the positive impact of a Labour Government. She particularly lauded Rachel for navigating challenges effectively.

Downing Street emphasized the PM’s focus on assisting struggling families, as conveyed in an exclusive interview with the Mirror. The Budget aimed to address the primary concern of families grappling with the cost of living.

While the message resonates for now, challenges lie ahead, including upcoming elections in Scotland, Wales, and English local councils in May. Reform poses a significant threat, and efforts are needed to restore the nation’s public services.

The Budget garnered goodwill among Labour ranks for Mr. Starmer and the Chancellor, although uncertainties loom on the horizon.
