US President Donald Trump criticized the recent release of Jeffrey Epstein files, calling it “a terrible thing.” The controversial photo dump included images of various prominent figures like Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, Sir Mick Jagger, and Lord Mandelson. Despite being mentioned in the files, Trump defended these individuals, suggesting their encounters with Epstein were innocent, despite Epstein’s history as a convicted child sex offender.

In response to the release, Trump expressed his disapproval of the focus on other individuals in the photos, attributing it to an attempt to divert attention from the success of the Republican Party. He also spoke positively about Bill Clinton, emphasizing their cordial relationship and suggesting that Clinton, being a public figure, could handle the scrutiny. Trump placed blame on Congressional Democrats for the push to release the files, acknowledging Epstein’s extensive connections in the 1990s and 2000s.

The data dump was prompted by the US Deputy Attorney General’s commitment to protecting Epstein’s victims, leading to the release of hundreds of thousands of documents over the following weeks. The US Department of Justice was legally obligated to make all investigation-related files public following the enactment of the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

Epstein, a convicted sex offender awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was found dead in his jail cell in Manhattan in August 2019, ruled as suicide. The investigation into his death revealed negligence by the guards assigned to monitor him, who had fallen asleep and falsified records. Additionally, malfunctioning or broken cameras in the area raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death.
