Virgin Media has announced an upcoming upgrade for some broadband customers, offering a free enhancement to their home routers. The telecommunications company revealed that users still using older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices will soon have the opportunity to switch to the more advanced Hub 5 technology.

The newer Hub 5 features Wi-Fi 6 technology, providing faster and more reliable connections compared to the outdated routers. Eligible customers will receive notifications via email in the following weeks and months as the gradual rollout extends throughout 2026.

Virgin Media highlighted the benefits of the Hub 5, emphasizing its Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas that enhance coverage within the home. The company assured that selected customers with older routers will be upgraded gradually, benefiting thousands during the year.

Customers eligible for the upgrade will be contacted directly by Virgin Media, eliminating the need for proactive action until receiving communication from the company. To confirm eligibility, customers can log into their My Virgin Media account on the website.

To identify the router model currently in use, customers can check the sticker on the back or bottom of the device or access the information through the Virgin Media Connect app.

Upgrading to the Hub 5 router can significantly enhance broadband performance, offering wider Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and support for future updates. The advanced technology is capable of handling faster Gig1 speeds, resulting in quicker downloads and streaming experiences. Gig1 speeds enable users to download a full HD movie in under 40 seconds, more than 10 times faster than the UK average.

Wi-Fi 6, the latest wireless networking technology, delivers faster speeds, increased efficiency, and enhanced performance in busy environments. It accommodates multiple connected devices concurrently, provides superior performance across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, and offers energy efficiency suitable for modern smart homes with high data demands. While Wi-Fi 7 technology is also available, Wi-Fi 6 remains optimal for average users.
