Wes Streeting has announced that young individuals leaving care will be entitled to free prescriptions, dental care, and eyecare services until they reach the age of 25. This initiative aims to support those in care who encounter significant health disparities early in life. As part of the newly introduced reforms, family doctors will be notified about children in settings like foster care or children’s homes to ensure comprehensive care and prevent any oversight.

A three-year trial program is set to enhance access to mental health services, while the government plans to experiment with paid internships for care leavers within the NHS and introduce a guaranteed interview scheme for health service positions.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) estimates that tens of thousands of care leavers will benefit from complimentary prescriptions, eye care, and dental services until they reach 25 years old. In 2025, there were more than 50,000 care leavers aged between 17 and 21.

DHSC highlighted the lack of support for young people in care after they turn 18, emphasizing their increased vulnerability to mental health issues and challenges in accessing healthcare. Many face obstacles in registering with a GP or dentist and are at a higher risk of experiencing homelessness or unemployment.

The recommendations put forth by children’s minister Josh MacAlister, a former social care adviser at DHSC, aim to address the social injustices faced by children raised in care. The government’s objective is to enhance life opportunities for these individuals through a coordinated approach.

Mr. Streeting emphasized the need to tackle health inequalities affecting care leavers, highlighting the government’s commitment to leveling the playing field for all children. The efforts undertaken aim to provide essential healthcare services and career prospects to care leavers, fostering a brighter future for them.
