A collision occurred between a speedboat carrying numerous tourists and a fishing trawler near the Phi Phi Islands in southern Thailand. The incident involved the Korawich Marine 888 vessel, which was carrying 55 individuals. Tragically, an 18-year-old Russian tourist named Elizaveta S lost her life despite rescue efforts.
Local reports indicated that around twelve people sustained injuries in the crash. One individual was initially in critical condition and was rushed to Phi Phi Hospital, while the rest received medical attention from paramedics before being transferred to hospitals in Phuket for further treatment.
The accident occurred in the vicinity of Koh Gai Island, near the Phi Phi Islands, in the waters between Phuket and Krabi. The speedboat suffered severe damage to its bow, causing it to capsize and sink in the Andaman Sea. Fortunately, the fishing trawler, known as Pichai Samut 1, remained unharmed, and there were no reports of oil spills or environmental harm.
The Russian Consulate General in Phuket confirmed the death of the young Russian woman and expressed condolences. Investigations are underway to determine the factors contributing to the collision, such as speed, visibility, and navigation protocols at the time. Despite the incident occurring in Krabi Province waters, rescue and medical teams from Phuket were mobilized due to their proximity and resources.
While the nationalities of all passengers have not been officially disclosed, reports indicated the presence of Russian-speaking tourists among the passengers. The southern Andaman coast of Thailand is a popular tourist boating destination, especially during the peak winter season, with numerous speedboat operations connecting Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands.
