Keir Starmer criticized the imposition of tariffs by Donald Trump on countries opposing his desire to acquire Greenland, deeming it “incorrect” during a series of discussions today, including one with the US President.

The UK Prime Minister engaged in urgent talks with the US President following concerns raised by NATO members, including the UK, about the potential strain on relations due to the threats of tariffs linked to Greenland.

A statement from Downing Street highlighted that the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of security in the High North for all NATO allies to safeguard Euro-Atlantic interests. He also denounced the application of tariffs on allies striving for collective NATO security as unjust.

President Trump recently announced plans to impose 10% tariffs on countries, including the UK, if they oppose his bid for Greenland, with a possible increase to 25% by June 1 if a deal is not reached.

Cabinet ministers, including Keir Starmer, criticized this move as “entirely inappropriate.” In a joint declaration, several NATO countries, including Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK, rebuffed the threats, emphasizing their commitment to Arctic security and sovereignty principles.

In response to the escalating situation, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy affirmed the UK’s unwavering stance on Greenland, asserting that the territory’s future should be determined by the wishes of its people and Denmark, despite the US threats. Nandy stressed the importance of maintaining a crucial relationship with the US while standing firm on the UK’s position.

Various world leaders, such as French President Emmanuel Macron and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, have also expressed defiance against intimidation tactics and emphasized the need for cooperation rather than confrontation. EU ambassadors have been called for emergency discussions to address the tariff threats.
