Virgin Media O2 users are being cautioned about a concerning email circulating in the UK. The warning comes in the wake of the closure of O2’s outdated 3G mobile platform earlier this year, prompting a transition to faster 4G and 5G services for affected individuals.
While the majority of O2 customers are unaffected by the platform switch, scammers are exploiting the situation. Fraudulent emails resembling official communications from the company are being sent to trick users into believing they need a SIM card upgrade.
The deceptive email with the subject line “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network” is designed to appear legitimate, but Virgin Media O2 clarifies that these messages are not authentic and should be disregarded.
Recipients are advised not to click on any links, respond to the email, and instead delete it promptly. In case of receiving such emails, individuals are encouraged to report them by forwarding to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.
This phishing scam aims to deceive individuals into disclosing sensitive personal information. In some instances, scammers may even send a SIM card via courier and request recipients to activate it with a PIN. The email may also prompt users to log in to the O2 app using a provided password and feature a “Contact Us” button that could lead victims directly to the scammers.
If successful, the scammers could potentially access private accounts, gather personal data for illicit purposes, or engage in identity theft. Therefore, it is crucial to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of emails from service providers. When in doubt, it is advisable to contact the company directly through official channels and seek advice from trusted sources before taking any action.
