Millions of voters may face further delays in local elections scheduled for May due to a reorganization of local government. The government has given the green light for 63 council areas to potentially push back their elections until 2027, following previous postponements. This move is part of an initiative to revamp town halls by eliminating certain two-tiered councils in favor of larger, more efficient administrative structures aimed at enhancing public services.

During a session in the Commons, Local Government Minister Alison McGovern acknowledged that several regions have expressed concerns about lacking the necessary resources to undergo reorganization within the current timeframe. She emphasized the importance of allowing councils to prioritize essential services and restructuring efforts over imminent elections for areas that might soon undergo changes.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has criticized the inefficiency of two-tier authorities, advocating for a streamlined system that merges services like housing, planning, and roads under a single entity. A total of 204 councils in 21 regions are currently undergoing reorganization, with 63 of them slated to hold elections in May 2026. These councils have been requested to submit their opinions on potential election delays by January 15, with the possibility of some councils proceeding with the planned May elections.

Criticism arose from Tory minister Paul Holmes, accusing the government of postponing elections out of fear of facing challenging contests in May. In response, Minister McGovern reiterated that the default stance is for elections to proceed unless there are compelling reasons for a delay.

Chair of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee, Florence Eshalomi, expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of the announcement, made on the final day before recess when many MPs were away. She highlighted the significance of the issue for numerous members and their inability to address concerns directly with the minister.

Various councils across the UK, including Adur District Council, Basildon Borough Council, and many others, have been given the opportunity to voice their stance on potential election delays, reflecting the ongoing discussions and decisions surrounding the reorganization of local government structures.
