A haunting final message from WWE star Chris Benoit has resurfaced almost twenty years following one of wrestling’s most tragic incidents. In June 2007, Benoit, a prominent figure in WWE, committed the brutal act of murdering his wife Nancy and their seven-year-old son Daniel before taking his own life at their Fayetteville, Georgia residence.
The shocking murders had a profound impact on the world and forever altered the landscape of professional wrestling. Leading up to the discovery of the tragic event, Benoit sent distressing messages to close friend and fellow wrestler Chavo Guerrero, signaling a troubling situation. Notably, Benoit left a chilling voicemail for a friend, indicating that his dogs were left outside and the back door was open, suggesting a sense of foreboding within his home.
Concern heightened when Benoit failed to show up at a scheduled WWE pay-per-view event, sparking worries for his and his family’s safety. Subsequently, a welfare check was initiated, and on June 25, 2007, police officers arrived at Benoit’s residence to a harrowing scene where the bodies of Benoit, Nancy, and Daniel were found.
Investigations revealed that the killings occurred over a three-day period, with Nancy being strangled first, followed by the sedation and suffocation of Daniel. Benoit ultimately took his own life by hanging himself using gym equipment in the basement.
At the time of his death at age 40, Benoit was recognized as one of the most technically skilled wrestlers of his era. His autopsy demonstrated severe brain damage consistent with advanced chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition associated with repeated head injuries, likened to advanced Alzheimer’s.
Although WWE initially paid tribute to Benoit following his death, once the truth emerged, the company swiftly distanced itself from him, erasing him from its history. Benoit’s name is rarely mentioned in WWE broadcasts, he is excluded from the Hall of Fame, and his legacy is forever overshadowed by his horrific actions.
