Thousands of individuals have lost their lives during the recent anti-government demonstrations in Iran. Amid threats of military action from U.S. President Donald Trump in response to civilian casualties, a shop owner has been condemned to death in a chilling execution.

The unrest initially erupted two weeks ago in Tehran’s markets due to soaring inflation, leading to the unavailability of essential goods and a surge in prices as the central bank terminated a program offering discounted U.S. dollars to select importers. This move compelled merchants to raise prices on their products.

The wave of protests has now swept across all 31 Iranian provinces, resulting in numerous casualties, with the government acknowledging over 2,000 fatalities among those involved in the uprisings. One of the victims, Erfan Soltani, aged 26, was apprehended at his residence in Fardis for his alleged participation in the anti-government protests. Despite lacking legal representation and a formal trial, he is scheduled to be hanged today after a brief farewell to his family.

Iran has witnessed a staggering number of executions, surpassing 972 in 2024 compared to the U.S.’s 25, as reported by United Against Nuclear Iran. The regime under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has long employed the death penalty, even during periods of relative calm. Human rights advocates have expressed alarm at the swift handling of cases like Erfan’s, highlighting the government’s ruthless tactics to suppress dissent and instill fear among the populace.

Concerns are mounting over the possibility of escalated violence, including public executions and mass state-sanctioned killings. The impending execution of Erfan is expected to be particularly gruesome, as public hangings using construction cranes are known for their prolonged and agonizing nature, often leading to death by suffocation and strangulation.

The practice of public executions in Iran has drawn condemnation from human rights bodies for violating international standards, with stoning remaining a sanctioned method of punishment, albeit less frequently employed in recent years due to global pressure. Reports of severe human rights abuses, such as the case of Payman Derafshan in 2021, further underscore the regime’s brutal crackdown on dissent.

Amidst the escalating turmoil, local residents are apprehensive about the future, with speculations of potential strikes following President Donald Trump’s hints at military intervention. Tehran shopkeeper Mahmoud and taxi driver Reza expressed skepticism about foreign intervention benefiting Iranians and noted the persistent despair and determination among the populace to continue protesting against the oppressive regime.
