Ministers are receiving pushback from pubs regarding their proposal to reduce the drink-drive limit in order to enhance road safety.

As part of a significant road safety initiative, England and Wales are considering lowering the drink-drive limit from 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath to 22 micrograms, aligning with Scotland’s limit established in 2014. Currently, England and Wales have the highest limit in Europe, alongside Malta.

The potential reduction in the limit could result in even a single pint pushing some individuals over the legal threshold. Various factors such as age, weight, and gender play a role in determining how much alcohol a person can consume before reaching the limit.

Representatives of rural pubs have expressed concerns that the proposal could negatively impact the sector. However, government officials have defended the plan, highlighting the tragic consequences of drink-driving incidents and emphasizing that Scotland’s experience with a lower limit did not adversely affect the pub industry.

Transport minister Ms. Greenwood emphasized the importance of not drinking and driving, stating that the proposed change aims to prevent further loss of lives due to alcohol-related accidents.

In 2024, 1,633 individuals lost their lives, and nearly 28,000 suffered serious injuries in traffic incidents in Britain. Despite a substantial decline in road fatalities between 2000 and 2010, the number of deaths caused by drink-driving has been on the rise, reaching a 13-year peak in 2022.

Critics of the plan, including Reform leader Nigel Farage, argue that it could spell trouble for country pubs. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) maintains its commitment to promoting responsible drinking but acknowledges the challenges faced by the pub sector, particularly in rural areas.

The proposed road safety strategy introduces measures such as mandatory installation of “alcolocks” for convicted drink-drivers and the authority to suspend driving licenses for individuals suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

An alcohol interlock, or ‘alcolock,’ is a device that prevents a driver from operating a vehicle if they have exceeded a predetermined alcohol limit.

The government is seeking public opinion on the potential drink-drive limit reduction through a poll, inviting individuals to share their views on the matter.
