Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10 approximately six months ago, leaving millions of laptops vulnerable to cyber threats due to the lack of essential security updates. While newer devices can upgrade to Windows 11, older PCs often do not meet the necessary system requirements, presenting users with a challenging dilemma.
Users facing this issue can opt to continue using their unsupported laptops, pay for extended updates (ESUs), or invest in new devices pre-installed with Windows 11. However, there is now an alternative solution available for aging PCs to prolong their lifespan and prevent disposal.
Google has partnered with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that revitalizes old laptops using ChromeOS Flex software. ChromeOS Flex is a lightweight operating system compatible with many older computers, essentially converting them into Chromebook-style devices. This allows users to access various services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to purchase a new laptop.
Although ChromeOS Flex has been downloadable for free from Google, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process. Users can trial the system from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. The USB kits have gained popularity, with high demand leading to them being currently out of stock.
In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers as Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, potentially rendering them obsolete. To provide an alternative, Google has partnered with Back Market to offer a ChromeOS Flex USB Kit for modernizing existing PCs or Macs.”
The kit is priced around £3, and the USB stick is reusable, contributing to electronic waste reduction. Despite the high demand, the item is currently unavailable on Back Market’s platform.
Google highlights that ChromeOS Flex not only revives old laptops but also offers environmental benefits by prolonging the use of existing devices. The software helps reduce carbon footprint by preventing the need for manufacturing new laptops, ultimately decreasing electronic waste generation. Additionally, ChromeOS consumes 19% less energy on average than comparable systems, further contributing to environmental sustainability.
For those considering a switch, ChromeOS Flex is a viable option and is compatible with various devices.
