A group of more than 20 Members of Parliament (MPs) are urging FIFA to consider removing the United States from the World Cup due to President Donald Trump’s alleged breaches of international law. The MPs are concerned about the US government’s actions in Venezuela and Trump’s perceived threats towards Denmark, Cuba, and Colombia. Trump has been accused of unauthorized actions, including an operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

The MPs are particularly alarmed by the White House’s reported contemplation of acquiring Greenland, a Danish territory, and Trump’s warnings to Colombian President Gustavo Petro. They believe that such behavior undermines the rules-based international order and should not be tolerated. The MPs emphasize the need for consistency in addressing violations of international law by powerful states.

Labour MP Brian Leishman, who is leading the motion, criticized the international community and sports organizations for their perceived hypocrisy. He highlighted the need for a unified stance against breaches of international law, citing the treatment of Russia as an example. The motion stresses that sporting events should not be used to normalize violations of international law by influential nations.

The group of MPs, which includes representatives from various political parties, is also calling on the UK government to oppose any double standards in upholding international norms. Meanwhile, the US national team, currently considered outsider contenders at odds of 50/1, is set to participate in the upcoming World Cup alongside teams like Paraguay and Australia.

Regarding the situation in Venezuela, the UK government has deferred to the White House to provide a legal justification for the operation. Maduro and his wife have been taken into custody and transported to the US to face conspiracy charges. Amidst the ongoing tensions, Britain has expressed solidarity with Denmark following Trump’s controversial remarks about Greenland.

Keir Starmer, a prominent political figure, has emphasized the importance of allowing the people of Greenland and Denmark to determine the future of the island. He has engaged in discussions with the US President to address the escalating situation diplomatically.
