A new scam targeting Apple users is making a comeback, preying on concerns about low iCloud storage. The scheme aims to deceive individuals into revealing sensitive information by exploiting the importance of Apple’s cloud service in safeguarding photos, documents, and other valuable files.

While iCloud simplifies device transitions for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users by centralizing data storage, its primary limitation lies in the restricted capacity, unless users opt for additional storage at varying costs. Scammers are capitalizing on these storage limits by instilling fear of account suspension due to full storage, prompting victims to disclose personal and financial details.

According to cybersecurity experts at Malwarebytes, fraudulent emails claiming insufficient iCloud space have surged recently. These deceptive messages, appearing to be from Apple, assert that files are not being backed up due to exceeded storage and urge users to upgrade their storage plan through a link leading to a counterfeit website designed to extract sensitive data.

Malwarebytes cautioned that scammers are leveraging the emotional trigger of potentially losing cherished photos to manipulate individuals into sharing private information. The fraudulent websites linked in these emails request personal and payment details under the guise of preventing iCloud data deletion.

To protect against such scams, users are advised to adhere to certain precautions, including accessing their account solely through Apple’s official channels, refraining from sharing passwords, verifying links in unexpected messages, utilizing updated anti-malware software with web protection, and avoiding suspicious websites and payment requests.

Malwarebytes emphasized that Apple does not send unsolicited emails regarding iCloud storage issues; genuine alerts are displayed within device settings or as official notifications. Users are encouraged to directly check their iCloud usage through device settings to ensure safety and avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
