Aldi has once again secured its position as the UK’s most economical supermarket for the fifth consecutive year, as per the latest findings from Which? consumer advocates in 2025.

According to Which?, Aldi emerged as the least expensive supermarket for ten out of the twelve months in 2025, maintaining its stronghold on affordability. Specifically in December, Aldi outperformed other supermarkets by offering a list of 68 items at an average cost of £123.60. Lidl followed closely behind, costing just 10p more with an average monthly expense of £123.70 for both Lidl Plus members and non-members.

While Lidl claimed the title of the cheapest supermarket twice in 2025, in July and October, the overall price difference between Aldi and Lidl for the entire year was minimal, standing at just 77p on average.

In contrast, for the same set of 68 items, Asda registered an average cost of £134.89 in December, while Tesco Clubcard members paid £135.84, or £139.12 without a Clubcard.

Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders spent £141.45, or £143.74 without the card, for the same items, whereas Waitrose emerged as the priciest option, with a total cost of £170.46 in December.

Comparative research by Which? showcased that Waitrose’s prices were on average 35% higher than Aldi’s throughout 2025. However, the analysis excluded Aldi and Lidl due to their limited product range. Asda topped the affordability chart in December for a larger list of 180 items, with an average bill of £450.82.

In December, Tesco Clubcard holders spent an average of £462 for the same items, while non-Clubcard holders paid £493.53. Morrisons shoppers paid £466.04 with a loyalty discount or £467.46 without, and Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders were charged £468.61, compared to £501.89 for non-members.

Waitrose continued to be the most expensive choice for the larger shopping list, with an average bill of £529.17. The analysis included special offers and loyalty prices but excluded multibuys.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, emphasized the consistency of Aldi’s performance and highlighted the significant savings that shoppers could make by choosing the right supermarket for their needs. She also praised Asda for offering a wide range of branded goods at competitive prices.

Given the ongoing concern over food expenses for many households, the advice remains to shop wisely, as selecting Aldi or other budget-friendly options could potentially save consumers hundreds of pounds annually.
