Anthony Joshua, the former two-time heavyweight champion, has resumed training in the boxing gym nearly three weeks after a tragic car accident in Nigeria. Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the loss of two close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.
While in Nigeria for a holiday and family visit, Joshua had recently defeated Jake Paul before the accident. After receiving hospital treatment and being discharged on New Year’s Eve, Joshua has been seen working out in the gym, engaging in what he calls “mental strength therapy.” Photos and videos shared by Joshua on Snapchat show him doing various exercises, including hitting pads, lower leg workouts, and using a stationary bike and a pool.
Despite reports that Joshua may retire following the accident, his future in boxing remains uncertain. His uncle mentioned that Joshua had privately expressed his intention to retire, citing emotional strain on the family during his fights. However, Mirror Fighting reports that Joshua has not made a final decision on his boxing career.
The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was charged over the crash, faces legal proceedings for causing death by dangerous driving among other charges. Reports revealed that Joshua narrowly escaped death as he had initially been seated in the front of the vehicle but was later asked to move to the back by the driver.
Promoter Eddie Hearn emphasized that no discussions are ongoing about Joshua’s return to boxing, indicating that Joshua needs time to recover physically and emotionally before making any decisions about his future in the sport. Hearn expressed confidence that Joshua may want to return to boxing eventually but stressed the importance of letting Joshua heal and decide at his own pace.
