Another Conservative figure, Nadhim Zahawi, has made a move to Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage. Zahawi, a former Cabinet Minister known for his role in the Covid vaccine rollout, recently joined the party, adding both influence and controversy to their ranks.
Zahawi faced scrutiny in the past for not disclosing his tax affairs investigation while in office, leading to his dismissal from the Government. Additionally, he made headlines for claiming expenses for his stables’ electricity bills and attending a controversial men-only event that faced allegations of misconduct towards hostesses.
Despite his wealth and business connections, Zahawi’s switch to Reform UK aims to attract donors and reshape the party’s image. However, this move has raised questions about Farage’s attempt to distance Reform from traditional politics while embracing former Tories like Zahawi, potentially blurring the party’s anti-establishment stance.
The Tories responded strongly to Zahawi’s defection, suggesting he sought a peerage before leaving for Reform, a claim Zahawi denies. Notably, Zahawi’s shift marks another high-profile Boris Johnson loyalist joining Reform, indicating a lack of confidence in Johnson’s political future.
In a press conference, Zahawi expressed discontent with the country’s state under current leadership, despite serving four Tory Prime Ministers. His decision to align with Reform as a solution for Britain’s issues remains to be accepted by the public, raising doubts about the party’s proposed remedy.
