Global temperatures saw a decline in 2025, yet concerns persist regarding the ongoing impact of climate change on communities worldwide. Wildlife faces significant threats due to habitat shifts and deteriorating environmental conditions.

Despite these challenges, various organizations and activists are dedicated to creating safer environments for animals globally. One approach involves constructing infrastructure that facilitates wildlife movement over or across human-made barriers.

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, currently being built northwest of Los Angeles, is set to become the world’s largest animal crossing upon completion. The £68 million project, spanning the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, has been in the planning stages for decades.

Construction work commenced in early 2022, with an initial target opening date in early 2026. However, due to adverse weather conditions causing delays, the launch has been rescheduled to November 2026. Beth Pratt, a project spokesperson, attributed the setbacks to storm-related issues that necessitated repeated work on the massive supports and surrounding groundwork.

Despite the nearly year-long delay in completion, expectations remain high for the crossing’s positive impact on local wildlife, with estimates indicating a significant reduction in animal-vehicle collisions. A similar crossing near Salt Lake City in Utah reportedly reduced such incidents by 77%.

Beth Pratt, also California’s regional director for the National Wildlife Federation, emphasized the importance of finding solutions to protect the area’s wildlife population, particularly mountain lions faced with extinction risks.

The wildlife bridge is named after philanthropist Wallis Annenberg, a key figure in the project who passed away at age 86. Apart from her environmental contributions, Wallis was known for her advocacy for science and education initiatives.

In a statement following her demise, Wallis’ family expressed admiration for her resilience in the face of cancer, highlighting her enduring spirit and wisdom that will be cherished.
