Donald Trump has triggered concerns of a potential negative chain of events, according to the UK and various European nations, by hinting at imposing tariffs if they refuse to discuss the sale of Greenland.
A joint response from the eight countries targeted by Trump’s tariff threats on Truth Social has criticized his approach in attempting to acquire Greenland from Denmark.
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to Arctic security as a shared interest within NATO. They expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, advocating for a dialogue based on principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The countries condemned tariff threats as harmful to transatlantic relations, pledging a coordinated response to defend their sovereignty.
Trump warned that the UK and the other seven nations could face escalating tariffs on exports to the US if Greenland is not acquired. He emphasized the need for immediate action to safeguard global peace and security.
Various world leaders, including the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, have condemned Trump’s tariff strategy. They have vowed not to yield to intimidation or blackmail.
Despite escalating tensions over Greenland, reports suggest that the affected countries were caught off guard by the developments.
Last week, the UK confirmed sending a military officer to Greenland at Denmark’s request, as part of a planned Arctic endurance exercise. Downing Street clarified that it was not a formal deployment but a response to Denmark’s military activities in the Arctic.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and European Council president Antonio Costa highlighted that the Danish exercise posed no threats and cautioned against the risks of a downward spiral in transatlantic relations due to tariffs.
