At the age of 13, a young girl left her home to meet someone she thought was a trusted friend, only to unknowingly become involved in a significant child abduction case in online history.

During the early 2000s, in the midst of unregulated online environments, Alicia Kozakiewicz struck up a friendship with an individual she met on the internet, believing them to be her peer. However, it was later revealed that this person was actually 31 years old and introduced Alicia to another person.

Through months of frequent conversations, shared interests, and emotional bonding, Alicia and her newfound online companion developed a close relationship.

On New Year’s Day in 2002, Alicia informed her parents that she was unwell and retreated to her room to rest. In reality, she left to meet her online friend in person.

“He was the individual I met on New Year’s Day and who abducted me in his car,” Alicia later recounted in a personal account for the BBC, as reported by the Mirror US.

Following their meeting, the situation turned violent quickly. Alicia described how she was forcefully restrained, threatened, and subjected to physical and verbal abuse by her captor.

As they departed from her hometown of Pittsburgh, Alicia hoped that the ordeal would end soon, but the reality was far more terrifying as she feared for her life at every moment during the journey.

After a harrowing five-hour drive, Alicia found herself in Virginia, where she was taken to a property and confined in a basement filled with incomprehensible equipment.

Subsequently, she endured unimaginable trauma, including being sexually assaulted, chained, and subjected to severe physical abuse over the course of four days.

Despite the passage of time, Alicia emphasized that the duration of suffering does not diminish its impact, as she reflected on the intense pain and fear she experienced during the ordeal.

As the abuse continued, with the perpetrator even live streaming the events online, Alicia felt helpless and feared for her life, constantly aware of the potential for further violence.

Her situation grew increasingly dire as her captor indicated his intentions to harm her further, leading Alicia to resign herself to a grim fate.

However, a stroke of luck intervened when authorities, alerted by a vigilant viewer of the live stream, located Alicia and rescued her from captivity.

The perpetrator, Scott Tyree, was apprehended and sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his crimes against Alicia. Despite serving his sentence, he faced legal repercussions for violating parole upon release.

In the aftermath of her traumatic experience, Alicia dedicated herself to advocating for child protection, raising awareness about online safety, and supporting missing children. Through initiatives like the Alicia Project and Alicia’s Law, she has championed efforts to combat internet crimes against minors.

Alicia’s story serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to act swiftly when a child is reported missing, emphasizing the critical importance of timely intervention in such cases.
