Team GB speed skater Niall Treacy initially placed sixth in the short track men’s 1500m final but was later moved to ninth position due to a collision that also affected two other racers. The referee’s decision to penalize Treacy led to his drop in rankings during the final event, which had extra participants due to previous crashes in the semi-finals.

Treacy finished significantly ahead of the seventh-place skater, Shoaong Liu from China, who was involved in the collision alongside him. Unfortunately, another Chinese competitor, Long Sun, had to withdraw due to an injury. The gold medal was secured by Jens van ‘T Wout from the Netherlands, maintaining their strong performance in the sport, followed by Hwang Daehoen from Korea and Roberts Kruzbergs from Latvia on the podium.

Former Team GB skater Wilf O’Reilly expressed disappointment for Treacy, noting that avoiding trouble was crucial in this race. Treacy’s collision hindered his chances of reaching the podium, despite skating well. Treacy recounted the incident, explaining that his focus on maintaining pace with the leaders caused him to overlook the skaters behind him, resulting in his fall after leading the race briefly.

Following a thorough review, Treacy’s disqualification sparked outrage among Team GB supporters on social media. In an interview with TNT Sports, Treacy acknowledged the unfavorable outcome but expressed pride in his performance, emphasizing the joy he experienced during the competition.
