As the summer season approaches, many Brits are likely envisioning their upcoming holidays, with Spain’s Balearic Islands, including Majorca and Palma, often being top destinations on their list.

However, this year’s holiday plans could face a setback due to a concerning report revealing high levels of pollution affecting some of the region’s most popular beaches. The Balearic Sea Report 2026 highlighted significant “faecal contamination” issues for the first time, indicating a worrying decline in water quality across the area.

According to Informa Mar Balear, bathing water standards have drastically dropped since 2010, especially on urban beaches. More troubling is the doubling of incidents of microbiological contamination in the past year, with cases increasing from 46 to 92, leading to 20 swimming bans and 72 swim warnings.

Specific areas like Ciutadella, Santanyí, Calvià, and Sóller have been particularly impacted by faecal contamination problems. Nevertheless, there is some positive news, as Formentera and Menorca are reported to have the cleanest bathing waters in the region.

The report emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring and improved communication with beach visitors regarding safe usage. In addition to sewage concerns, another issue of concern for sun-seekers planning their vacations is the announcement from a prominent Majorcan hotelier, Joan Trian Riu, who warned that the island has reached “full capacity.”

Riu, the managing director of Riu Hotels and Resorts, mentioned that due to high demand, prices are being increased, and he cautioned that the situation may worsen for residents. He highlighted the limited space on Majorca and the impact of the peak tourist season on the island’s infrastructure and local businesses.

Addressing the challenges faced, Riu stressed the importance of making bold decisions to ensure sustainability in the long run. The need for action to tackle these issues is evident, as the current trends may not be viable for the island’s future.
