A renewed search effort for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which disappeared in 2014, has faced setbacks despite initial hopes of a breakthrough. The search operation, led by Ocean Infinity in partnership with the Malaysian government, was reignited after being called off last year.
The hunt was intensified when a search vessel, Armada 86 05, appeared to revisit a previously searched location. Speculation arose that the ship was equipped with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) for underwater exploration. However, science journalist Jeff Wise debunked these claims, clarifying that the ship had paused due to adverse weather conditions, not to deploy ROVs as rumored.
Wise emphasized the misinformation circulating online and highlighted that the vessel did not carry ROVs but refrigeration units. The ongoing search for MH370 remains a mystery in aviation history, with the aircraft’s disappearance being the deadliest incident involving a missing plane.
While enthusiasts and internet sleuths have been eager for updates, the operation’s communications have been limited. The American marine robotics team, known for locating Sir Ernest Shackleton’s lost ship, Endurance, in 2022, is gearing up for another search attempt following a previous unsuccessful effort in 2018.
An Ocean Infinity spokesperson mentioned that official updates on the search operation would be communicated by the Malaysian government due to the operation’s sensitivity.
