A recent report by consumer advocate Which? revealed that several major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The report highlights that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing larger brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

The study uncovered that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, are common among broadband users. Complaints about slow download speeds and service outages were also prevalent among consumers. A significant 91% of broadband customers reported encountering problems with their service in the past year, indicating that a vast majority have not experienced trouble-free connectivity.

Among the prominent providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers experiencing this issue. Meanwhile, Virgin Media performed poorly with 30% of users facing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices. Additionally, a quarter of Virgin customers expressed dissatisfaction with slow download speeds.

Sky users were particularly dissatisfied with broadband performance, with nearly one in three stating their service was not fast enough. Other major providers such as TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received low ratings from customers.

On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for their superior performance and reliability compared to major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

The findings align with previous research by Which?, consistently showing that smaller broadband firms excel in reliability, customer service, and value compared to major providers. Which? encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service, recommending the use of Ofcom’s broadband checker to explore available options.

In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media emphasized the company’s ongoing investment in improving services, citing official data from Ofcom and independent rankings from Opensignal to demonstrate the quality of their broadband services.

Overall, the report underscores the importance of quality broadband as essential, urging consumers to leverage competitive deals and switch providers if not satisfied with their current service.
