Starting April, the TV licence fee is set to increase by £5.50, making it £180 annually. A TV licence is required to watch or record live TV, including content on BBC iPlayer. However, if you only stream shows on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, a TV licence is not necessary.
Watching live shows on these platforms does mandate a TV licence. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £1,000. Individuals exempt from needing a TV licence can declare so on the TV Licensing website.
According to a statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Government aims to uphold the BBC’s funding model as sustainable and affordable. Special provisions exist for over-75s receiving Pension Credit, care home residents, and visually impaired individuals.
Specific groups like individuals over 75 on Pension Credit, students living away from home using non-mains devices, visually impaired persons, and residents in care or sheltered housing can qualify for free or discounted TV licences.
