Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to allocate funding to ensure the continuity of the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible in Sheffield. The current contract of the Sheffield arena to host the tournament is nearing its expiration next year.
Local council leaders are highly motivated to keep the championship in Sheffield, despite Barry Hearn, the president of Matchroom Sport, suggesting the consideration of alternative venues.
The government has intervened by offering financial support. Prime Minister Starmer recently visited The Crucible to engage in discussions about the tournament’s future with council officials and local partners.
According to a source quoted by The Sheffield Star, negotiations are progressing rapidly. The Prime Minister’s involvement has provided significant momentum, emphasizing the importance of his participation.
The Crucible has been the traditional venue for the Snooker World Championships since 1977, although uncertainties have arisen due to the contractual situation.
Hearn has implied that if his demand for a £1 million prize fund is not met, Saudi Arabia could potentially host the tournament. He stressed the necessity for Sheffield to align with their expectations to secure the event’s future.
The 2026 World Snooker Championship is scheduled to commence on April 18 and run until May 4. Chinese player Zhao Xintong enters as the defending champion after defeating Mark Williams in the previous year’s final.
