A Steinbach boy, DeMari Disna, is confined indoors for the remainder of his summer following an accident where he was struck by an electric bike. The incident occurred while he was out with his siblings and friends at a local soccer park. His mother, Shannon Broesky, rushed him to the Bethesda Regional Health Centre, where he endured a 19-hour wait before receiving a soft cast for his fractured left leg. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg for a hard cast.
Despite the unfortunate incident, DeMari is handling the situation well, although his energy and outdoor activities have been curtailed. Broesky, who usually keeps a watchful eye on her children playing in the park, did not witness the collision but was informed by her daughters that a teenage girl on an e-bike accidentally struck DeMari.
Broesky is advocating for stricter regulations governing electric bikes to prevent similar accidents in the future. This call for action comes in light of the Manitoba government’s ongoing efforts to establish legislation concerning battery-powered bikes and scooters.
Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety on roads and trails. Steinbach’s mayor, Earl Funk, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for improved regulations and enhanced education regarding the operation of e-bikes.
In another city, Morden, Mayor Nancy Penner highlighted the importance of clear guidelines for the use of electric vehicles, emphasizing the need for age restrictions.
