Canada’s top science adviser suggests that the federal government should evaluate its handling of the COVID-19 crisis to enhance readiness for future health crises. Mona Nemer emphasized the importance of acknowledging people’s feelings and experiences related to the pandemic’s impact. She emphasized the need for a focused and non-political reflection process to address specific questions efficiently.

Nemer highlighted the importance of providing context for discussions on issues like vaccines to avoid overlooking the benefits they bring, such as saving lives. She stressed the significance of constructive reflection to better equip the country and its citizens for future health challenges.

In a separate development, Conservative MP Dean Allison announced plans to conduct an inquiry in September focusing on Canadians affected by COVID-19 vaccines. The inquiry aims to ensure a non-partisan approach, inviting members from all political parties to participate.

Nemer expressed concerns about diminishing trust in government and science, noting the importance of addressing public perspectives to build trust effectively. She also raised alarms about the global response to other infectious diseases like Ebola, pointing out the need to integrate pandemic preparedness into routine health services.

Despite the urgency seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nemer warned against complacency, citing ongoing threats from diseases like Ebola and bird flu. She emphasized the continuous need for preparedness and public trust-building efforts to navigate future health crises successfully.
