German authorities are probing a drone carrying explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov hinting at Moscow’s intention to increase retaliation against nations aiding Ukraine. Lavrov, in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, stated, “We will employ more severe methods to dismantle everything supporting the West in arming Kyiv’s military. We are already taking action.”

According to German investigators, an airport staff member came across a drone with an unidentified explosive device in the cargo operations zone’s security area near Leipzig airport’s south runway, classified as critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a crucial NATO airport for transporting armaments, ammunition, weapons, and other military supplies to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo companies.

The discovery of the drone, located next to one of the Ukrainian cargo planes, signifies “a heightened level of threat” for Germany, as mentioned by the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. Dobrindt highlighted that the incident appears to be part of a sophisticated hybrid threat scenario rather than the work of amateurs.

German authorities are investigating the incident without disclosing the drone’s origin. U.S. intelligence officials recently informed the Wall Street Journal that intelligence reports suggest the drone likely belonged to the Russian government.

Berlin is taking a cautious approach by reinforcing anti-drone capabilities while refraining from premature attributions. Dobrindt emphasized the importance of establishing facts before making official statements.

Officials caution that Russia is employing drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations across Europe, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming regional elections in Germany. Dobrindt expressed concerns about the evolving threats faced by Germany daily.

Dobrindt described Germany as a frequent target of hybrid warfare tactics, including espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and covert activities aimed at destabilizing the country and effecting political and social changes. Recent past incidents, such as the uncovered Russian plot to assassinate a German defense contractor CEO and the arrest of a suspected Russian spy scouting sabotage targets, underscore the ongoing threats.

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russian interference in Germany through Operation Overload, focusing on exploiting controversies within NATO member countries and Ukraine to undermine Ukraine’s war efforts and destabilize democracies. The ISD’s findings reveal a campaign utilizing disinformation and impersonation tactics to influence German politics and society.

Hans-Jakob Schindler, from the Counter Extremism Project, views the drone incident in Leipzig as a significant escalation of Russia’s interference tactics in Germany. Schindler raises concerns about the fine line between defense measures and direct conflict in responding to such aggressive attacks.

Lavrov’s recent statements are seen as a departure from Russia’s previous denials of interference in Western nations, signaling a more aggressive stance in the ongoing campaign against Europe, the West, and NATO.
