The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham faced a setback during its inaugural event as the first day of practice and qualifying was canceled due to incomplete track construction, preventing officials from conducting necessary safety checks. The organizers are planning to accommodate the missed track sessions on Saturday’s schedule to make up for the lost time.
This marks the first year that Markham has hosted the event, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held since its inception in 1986. IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment over the delay, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a safe environment for the event.
Local fans like Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo, who have been attending the race for two decades, voiced mixed feelings about the delay, acknowledging the significance of safety measures while also expressing disappointment over the lack of on-track action on the scheduled day.
The event’s move from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced last September, with the temporary circuit spanning Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Despite some incomplete features such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments, the organizers are optimistic about the upcoming track experience.
Government investments totaling $5 million were announced to support the event, with additional capital spending by the city of Markham exceeding $12 million. Spectators enjoyed free admission on Friday, with donations encouraged for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, drawing a sizable crowd to the Markham track amid warm weather conditions.
Off-track activities proceeded as planned, including autograph sessions with drivers, while Saturday’s schedule promises an action-packed day with practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and various races around the road course. IndyCar officials are confident that the circuit will deliver an exciting race experience, thanking the city of Markham for its support in creating a dynamic track layout.
In addition to IndyCar races, the weekend event will feature other racing series like USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series. Despite the challenges faced on the opening day, fans and participants are eager for the upcoming race weekend in Markham.
