Markham is gearing up for an exciting motorsports weekend as the NTT IndyCar Series, along with other racing series, descends on the city for the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event. While IndyCar has traditionally raced in Toronto, this marks the first time the event will be held outside the city, featuring a brand-new track layout.

The 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course will traverse areas such as the Unionville GO station grounds, the York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To facilitate access to the event, attendees are encouraged to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or take Highway 407. Parking options will be available west of the event venue.

To accommodate the influx of visitors, Metrolinx is enhancing service on the Stouffville Line with additional trips on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. York Region Transit will also increase its service frequency, while Markham is offering shuttle services between designated parking lots and the event grounds.

Residents of Markham have been enduring inconveniences due to track construction, including limited parking at Unionville GO and road closures. Several roads in Markham Centre will be affected by the event until Monday morning, with some closures extending until August 27 for track dismantling.

The highlight of the weekend will be the IndyCar race on Sunday, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points standings and considered a top contender. Notable drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also compete in support series races.

Drivers have noted the unique challenges of the Markham track, which features newly paved roads and elevation changes. Tickets for the event can be purchased for Saturday and Sunday, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open for free attendance as part of Fan Friday, with donations encouraged for Make-A-Wish Canada.
