More than 2,500 individuals have lost their lives in the Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is rapidly spreading across an area larger than France, as confirmed by senior United Nations Ebola co-ordinator Julien Harneis on Friday. During a video call from Bunia in northeastern Congo, Harneis emphasized the urgent need for additional assistance, noting that the current funding reserves are expected to be depleted within a few weeks. He highlighted the distressing situation where health workers are being targeted by fearful and outraged locals, leading to their own sickness and fatalities due to the disease.
In response to the escalating crisis, a batch of vaccines targeting a different strain of Ebola has been dispatched for advanced testing in the D.R.C. The country recently requested doses from the global Ebola virus disease vaccine stockpile, receiving an allocation of 70,000 shots, with 20,000 designated for a late-stage trial to assess their efficacy against the current Bundibugyo virus strain. The World Health Organization underscored the necessity for clinical trials to ascertain the vaccine’s potential effectiveness against the Bundibugyo virus in humans, as the current vaccine, Ervebo, is only approved for the Zaire Ebola virus strain.
The severity of the situation was further underscored by the declaration that the D.R.C.’s 17th Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, has become the most extensive in the nation’s history, surpassing the previous 2018-2020 epidemic. Harneis warned that the epidemic is rapidly expanding in an area larger than France, outpacing the containment efforts. Compounded by three decades of conflict in the region, the crisis is exacerbating humanitarian needs.
In a distressing revelation, it was disclosed that 160 healthcare workers have contracted Ebola, with 43 succumbing to the disease. Harneis lamented the additional challenges faced by responders, including attacks on health workers and facilities by hostile individuals, reflecting the fear and frustration prevalent in the community. Amidst concerns of misinformation and violent reactions from locals, aid workers have encountered significant obstacles, including reduced funding and logistical difficulties hindering response efforts.
