“TIFF Shifts Focus to Business: What Does It Mean for Film Fans?”

The Toronto International Festival has long been known for setting trends in the film industry. It was traditionally the go-to destination for movie stars looking to kick off their Oscar campaigns.

However, with more major films and top-tier celebrities choosing other festivals for their premieres, TIFF is rebranding itself with a fresh focus on movie acquisitions and packaging.

In a time of industry upheaval, this shift could help TIFF remain relevant. But as ticket prices climb, what does this transformation mean for the festival’s core audience: the film enthusiasts?

Let’s delve into TIFF’s cinematic makeover and highlight some noteworthy films you might want to catch.

### Emphasizing Business Deals
In line with the post-pandemic trend, prestigious titles like “Primetime” featuring Robert Pattinson and “You Can See Everything” by Nathan Fielder opted for Venice or Telluride over TIFF for their debuts. To adapt, TIFF is evolving to embrace dealmaking and high-energy strategy sessions common at major festivals.

Backed by a $23 million boost from Ottawa, TIFF: The Market offers 70 sessions exploring film, television, and interactive content. Projects like a sci-fi film starring Russell Crowe and Priyanka Chopra, a romantic comedy with Colin Firth and Halle Berry, and a new installment of the “Air Bud” series are among those up for grabs.

However, just like the fierce competition for premieres, TIFF faces rivalry from other industry contenders.

### The Impact of Global Markets
While TIFF aims to position itself as a fall alternative to Cannes, it also competes with the American Film Market in Los Angeles. While AFM focuses on mainstream films, TIFF, known for championing international cinema, is spotlighting emerging markets in Africa and Asia.

Amidst talks of new U.S. film production incentives, TIFF may attract international buyers seeking alternatives to Hollywood or avoiding border complexities.

### The Ticket Dilemma
As TIFF’s star power wanes and it transitions into a more business-oriented event, questions arise about the festival’s essence for film fans. With rising ticket prices (starting at $30 for regular screenings), fewer public attendees may fill the seats, impacting the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey acknowledges the allure of star-studded premieres commanding higher prices but notes they remain more affordable than sports events in the city, albeit potentially pricing out some fans.

### Must-See Films
Although the number of top celebrities attending TIFF may dwindle, the festival still showcases notable fall releases. “Ink,” directed by Danny Boyle, explores the rise of The Sun tabloid newspaper with Jack O’Connell rumored as the lead. “The Debut,” a Jesse Eisenberg project, portrays a community theater tale with Julianne Moore shining in a pivotal role.

### Diverse Programming
TIFF’s programming embraces both TV and film, featuring TV series in the Primetime section. Series like Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” with star Gary Oldman are headlining the event.

### Canadian Cinema Focus
Amidst the Canadian film industry’s success, despite trade challenges, there’s a strong Canadian presence at TIFF. Titles like “The Stunt Driver,” delving into the story of Canadian stuntman Ken Carter, and “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple,” a documentary on Rush drummer Neil Peart, are among the offerings. Additionally, unconventional films like “Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney” promise unique perspectives on Canadian subjects.

### Celebrating Diversity
Highlighting Indigenous talent, “Smudge the Blades” tells the story of an Indigenous hockey team in Northern Alberta. Directed and written by Cody Lightning, the film features a stellar Indigenous cast, offering a fresh perspective on sports narratives.

By adapting to industry shifts and showcasing a diverse range of films, TIFF continues to evolve while staying true to its roots as a hub for cinematic excellence.
