The mayor of Kenscoff, Jean Massillon, reported that armed assailants attacked the community late on Sunday, setting houses ablaze and fatally shooting residents. This neighborhood, positioned on a hillside with access points to the capital, has endured multiple attacks by armed groups over the past year, leading to the displacement of thousands of residents.
Despite efforts by foreign nations to bolster the country’s under-equipped police force, formidable gangs, united under a broad coalition, have solidified their control over Port-au-Prince and extended their influence to neighboring areas. In response to the tragic event, Haiti’s government condemned the “heinous attack” and pledged to enhance security measures. However, local residents demanded the resignation of the police chief, accusing the officers of failing to safeguard the victims who were killed just minutes away from the police station.
Amidst the chaos in Kenscoff, cries of grief filled the air as survivors stumbled upon the bodies of their loved ones strewn across the streets early Monday. Witnesses described the heart-wrenching scenes of mourning and loss, with one man desperately searching for his missing brother who tragically perished in the violence.
The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the attack, with Massillon attributing the violence to members of Viv Ansanm, a group designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government. Gangs, including Viv Ansanm, exert control over a significant portion of Port-au-Prince, with Kenscoff being a frequent target of their aggression.
The appalling incident adds to the already dire situation in Haiti, where gang violence has displaced a staggering 1.5 million individuals. The United Nations reported over 3,100 fatalities and 1,189 injuries in the country from January to June. The government’s plan to hold general elections in December faces uncertainties due to the current hazardous environment.
The recent attack follows the deportation of over 160 individuals back to Haiti by the U.S. government, marking the end of temporary protected status for some Haitians. The deportations included individuals with criminal backgrounds, as confirmed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
