The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record for the longest losing streak in CFL history. Following their 33-21 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night, the Redblacks have now suffered 15 consecutive defeats, dating back to the previous season. This surpasses the previous record held by the Shreveport Pirates, who lost 14 games in a row in 1994.
Described as “really disappointing” by passionate fan Jimmy Fata, the Redblacks’ current situation is a cause for concern among supporters. Fata expressed frustration over the team’s performance and the lack of clarity on the underlying issues contributing to their struggles.
The team’s streak not only marks a modern-era CFL record but also ranks as the third-longest in CFL history, dating back to 1907. Another loss in their upcoming game against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second spot in the record books.
CFL historian Steve Daniel highlighted the evolution of the league post-World War II, emphasizing the professionalization of football and the increased competitiveness among teams. He noted the challenges faced by early teams like the Ottawa Rough Riders and Ottawa Senators in an era when the sport was primarily amateur.
Looking ahead, Daniel suggested that the Redblacks focus on rebuilding their roster, particularly on the defensive side. Despite recent changes, including a revamped defensive lineup, the team continues to struggle in key areas such as scoring in the red zone.
Amidst the team’s ongoing difficulties, Fata emphasized the importance of unwavering fan support, likening it to standing by a child through thick and thin. He remains optimistic about the team’s prospects for improvement, despite the current string of losses.
