Hamilton is set to host a vibrant celebration of hip-hop culture this weekend, with dancers from the region converging on the city’s streets. The event, named 73 ‘Til Infinity: Outdoor Dance Series and initiated in 2023 to commemorate hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, will feature various activities including dance performances, workshops, a block party, and an all-styles dance battle.
Josh Taylor, the artistic director of Defining Movement Dance and the mind behind 73 ‘Til Infinity, described the event as a tribute to street dance culture. The festivities kicked off on Tuesday, coinciding with hip-hop’s birthday, with free workshops on King William Street. The celebration will culminate in a block party on Friday and a dance battle on Saturday.
Claris and Amelia Menjivar, sisters deeply embedded in the event since its inception, highlighted the importance of understanding the cultural roots of hip-hop. The duo, who teach and choreograph at Defining Movement Dance, emphasized the significance of showcasing the diverse street-dance styles such as breaking, locking, popping, and whacking. Claris stressed the importance of learning the history of hip-hop as a means to appreciate the culture built by Black and marginalized communities.
The weekend’s highlight will be the one-on-one dance battle on Saturday, judged by renowned street dancer Suga Pop, known for his contributions to the dance industry for decades. The competition will see dancers improvising to live music, vying for a cash prize. Suga Pop will also lead workshops, including one focused on teaching the choreography from Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” music video.
Despite being overshadowed by Toronto, Hamilton boasts a thriving dance community across various genres, according to Taylor. He emphasized the supportive and inclusive nature of the city’s dance scene, underscoring the essence of community showcased by events like 73 ‘Til Infinity. The Menjivar sisters echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the welcoming environment for all individuals, irrespective of their dance experience, to engage with and appreciate the energy of hip-hop culture.
