The presence of these animals has been observed in areas like Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park since August, with reports indicating that the coyotes have approached and followed people and their pets.
One resident, Scott Paton, shared his encounter with a coyote while walking his dogs in Les Sherman Park. Paton described the coyote as non-aggressive, displaying curiosity rather than hostility. Despite the sighting, he expressed little worry, stating that coyotes are a common presence in urban environments and are simply adapting to their surroundings.
However, not all residents share Paton’s calm demeanor, especially in the Cathedral neighborhood. Concerns have been raised about the bold behavior of the coyotes, with reports of them not being deterred by loud noises or attempts to scare them off. Regina city Coun. David Froh also had a close encounter with a coyote during a morning run in Les Sherman Park, noting the animal’s comfort around humans and their pets.
Acknowledging the public safety risk posed by persistent coyote sightings, the City of Regina has stated that it is working with provincial conservation officers to address the situation. Plans are in place to safely remove and relocate the coyotes, with a focus on ensuring the well-being of both the community and the animals involved.
While sightings of coyotes may raise concerns, Froh emphasized that such encounters are not uncommon in Regina and underscored the importance of coexisting with wildlife. He encouraged residents to report any sightings of coyotes or other potentially dangerous wildlife to the city authorities for appropriate action.
