The artist, whose real name was Slinger Francisco, died peacefully in New York surrounded by his family following a brief illness. Described as an icon in the entertainment industry, Francisco was celebrated for his talents as a singer, songwriter, and mentor, earning admiration from many.

Born in Grand Roy, Grenada, in July 1935, Francisco moved to Trinidad and Tobago with his family at a young age. Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of calypso music, became the stage for The Mighty Sparrow’s rise to fame, where he produced a string of hit songs such as “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” “Congo Man,” “Mr. Walker,” and “The Lizard.”

Praising his musical legacy, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar highlighted how The Mighty Sparrow’s music resonated with the nation, reflecting its spirit and stories worldwide. Over the years, Francisco received national honors in Trinidad and Tobago, and in 1987, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of the West Indies.

Leaders from various Caribbean nations, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica, paid tribute to The Mighty Sparrow’s influence and contributions. Throughout his six-decade career, The Mighty Sparrow recorded numerous songs and performed globally, including notable venues like Madison Square Garden in New York City. His music ranged from festive carnival tunes to politically charged compositions, such as “Model Nation,” “Martin Luther King For President,” and “Kennedy and Kruschev.”

The Mighty Sparrow’s connection to Toronto was evident through his song “Toronto Mas,” celebrating the city’s Caribana festival. His presence in Toronto was felt in various events, including the 2014 screening of the documentary “The Glamour Boyz Again: The Mighty Sparrow and Lord Superior on the Hilton Rooftop” at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Renowned for advancing the art of calypso, The Mighty Sparrow was hailed as a cultural revolutionary and a master entertainer by Trinidadian cultural historian Rudolph Ottley. His influence and legacy in the world of calypso music are expected to endure for generations to come.
