American rapper Rick Ross, whose legal name is William Roberts II, was taken into custody in Miami Beach on Thursday following allegations of domestic violence, as confirmed by local authorities to The Associated Press. Ross faces one felony charge of battery by strangulation and a misdemeanor battery charge. He was subsequently released on bail after appearing in court.
The incident reportedly occurred on Aug. 28, when an unnamed woman living with Ross claimed he physically assaulted her after accusing her of infidelity. The woman alleged that Ross choked her with her shirt collar and forcefully pushed her against a wall. The incident was reported on Tuesday, leading to Ross surrendering himself at the local police station on Thursday.
In response to the allegations, Ross took to Instagram to assert his innocence, denouncing the accusations as fabricated. His legal representatives also issued a statement to CBC News maintaining his innocence and confirming his plea of not guilty to the charges.
Ross, known for his music career in Miami, gained prominence in the 2000s with hits like “Hustlin'” and signing with Def Jam Records under Jay Z’s label. He further established his own music label, Maybach Music Group, signing notable artists such as Meek Mill and French Montana.
A court arraignment for the case has been scheduled for Oct. 22. If you or someone you know is experiencing intimate partner violence, seek assistance through crisis lines and local support services.
