The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously undisclosed sections of a key study from September 1986, commissioned for a federal inquiry into war crimes. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill, in a recent announcement, directed the government to unveil redacted segments of the study concerning the resettlement of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada post-World War II. B’nai Brith Canada has persistently pushed for broader access to the report authored by researcher Alti Rodal.
In February 2024, Library and Archives Canada partially revealed more sections of the report following a request from B’nai Brith. However, certain parts, such as discussions on the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the integration of Nazi collaborators into Canada, were still withheld by the institution.
Justice Fothergill dismissed the government’s argument that releasing specific additional details could negatively impact Canada’s international relations.
