NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s junior hockey team, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League. Mayich, aged 21, was selected by the St. Louis Blues as a defenseman in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
According to his player record, Mayich participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before transitioning to the 67’s. The OHL reported that he was admitted to the hospital on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona.
The St. Louis Blues have expressed their support for Mayich’s recovery. Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, mentioned that a student from the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university refrained from disclosing the student’s name and stated that they are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
In response to the situation, Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, released a statement conveying the organization’s thoughts and prayers for Mayich’s well-being and recovery during his medical treatment in Arizona. The Blues extended their heartfelt support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates during this challenging period.
OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, expressing solidarity with Mayich, his parents, John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family. Crawford highlighted Mayich’s contributions during his four seasons in the league, emphasizing the league’s collective support and concern for his recovery.
The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously celebrated Mayich’s achievements in 2021 when he joined the ’67s and in 2023 when he was drafted by the Blues. The Huskies acknowledged his long-standing involvement with the organization since the age of nine.
