A Yukon advocate has noted positive developments in the territory’s child welfare system, following critical reports. The Yukon Legislative Assembly’s standing committee on public accounts has expressed doubts about the Health and Social Services department’s actions in response to concerns raised by the auditor general. The committee has urged the department to promptly address issues such as critical incidents, data management, and outcome tracking.

During a CBC interview, Annette King, the territory’s child and youth advocate, acknowledged the alignment between the auditor’s findings and her observations. She mentioned witnessing some improvements and described the current moment as a rare instance of accountability.

The legislative committee has emphasized the need for mandatory training for new hires dealing with vulnerable clients and a comprehensive plan to address social worker vacancies. Concerns were raised about the lack of safe alternatives to foster and group homes in rural and Indigenous communities.

King highlighted persistent issues, including the high number of young children in the system and the shortage of social workers. The committee chair, Kate White, emphasized the importance of updating training standards and case management systems to better support workers and families. White expects the department to respond to the recommendations within the specified deadlines.

Both King and White expressed hope for continued progress in child welfare advocacy, considering historical challenges faced by Indigenous communities. They are optimistic about ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of children and youth in the territory.
