Aldi has regained its position as the most affordable supermarket in the UK following Lidl’s lead last month. According to the latest supermarket price analysis by Which?, a basket of 75 items cost an average of £127.92 at Aldi in August 2025. This was 38p cheaper than the same basket at Lidl, which totaled £128.30 on average with its loyalty program, Lidl Plus.
In July, Lidl held the top spot for affordability but slipped to second place this month. The comparison included a variety of products, both branded and own-brand, such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
Tesco Clubcard members spent an average of £142.36 on their shopping, while non-members paid £145.01. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders spent an average of £144.75, compared to £149.02 for non-cardholders.
For a larger list of 190 items, Asda remained the most budget-friendly supermarket this month. Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their smaller product ranges. The average cost of a larger shopping list at Asda was £474.86, undercutting Tesco with a Clubcard by £11.03 (£485.89).
Waitrose emerged as the most expensive option for both small and large shopping lists, with costs of £172.61 and £548.14, respectively.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented, “Aldi has reclaimed its title as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in August, delivering excellent value without requiring membership fees. Asda stands out as the most economical non-discount supermarket for larger grocery runs, outperforming Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons. With household expenses on the rise, savvy shoppers can save up to 35% by choosing one supermarket over another.”
