Angela Rayner has stepped down from her government position, informing Keir Starmer that she bears full responsibility for her error regarding stamp duty. As the Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary, Rayner found herself in a dilemma after realizing she had underpaid taxes on a flat she purchased in Hove, Sussex. Rayner acknowledged the mistake was made unintentionally but admitted to falling short of expected standards in her recent property transaction.

Upon self-reporting the issue to the independent standards advisor, a report was submitted to the Prime Minister today. Despite acknowledging Rayner’s integrity and commitment to public service, ethics watchdog Sir Laurie Magnus found her in breach of the ministerial code concerning her tax affairs. Consequently, Rayner has also resigned from her position as deputy Labour leader, triggering the need for a successor election.

In her resignation letter addressed to Keir Starmer, Rayner expressed gratitude for the support received and detailed her decision to refer herself for investigation regarding potential underpayment of Stamp Duty Land Tax. Emphasizing her dedication to upholding high standards in public service, Rayner admitted to the oversight in seeking proper tax advice given her role as Housing Secretary and complex family circumstances.

Rayner highlighted the strain of media scrutiny on her family as a factor in her decision to resign, prioritizing their well-being. Recognizing the impact on her family and in light of the investigation findings, Rayner opted to step down from her roles as Deputy Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

Reflecting on her journey from a council estate in Stockport to serving at the highest government level, Rayner emphasized her commitment to advocating for working-class communities. She outlined key legislative achievements during her tenure, including significant advancements in workers’ rights, renters’ protections, housing investments, devolution reforms, and electoral reforms benefiting marginalized communities.

Rayner acknowledged the collaborative efforts of her team and expressed determination to continue advocating for the people she represents. She extended gratitude to her colleagues and emphasized her ongoing dedication to serving the country and the Labour Party.
