Nine individuals have been apprehended following a large-scale altercation at a Wetherspoons establishment located within a bustling train station, recent reports have revealed. The incident transpired in full view of dismayed commuters at London Victoria Station at approximately 11:20 pm on Saturday. Video footage initially shared on social media depicted one man delivering two punches to another man’s head.
The scuffle seemingly began at a table with a view of the station concourse, a hub for services to Brighton, Gatwick Airport, and parts of Surrey. The situation escalated as repeated head punches were exchanged despite some attempts by onlookers to intervene and diffuse the situation. A passenger captured a one-minute-and-six-second video of the tense encounter on the concourse.
Efforts by station personnel to quell the disturbance at the Wetherspoons were observed, with one woman seen trying to separate some of the men involved, resulting in two individuals ending up on the floor. British Transport Police responded to the incident, confirming the arrest of nine men. According to a police spokesperson, the arrests included eight individuals on suspicion of affray, one for suspected common assault and affray, and another for attempted Section 18 GBH. All individuals have been released on bail while investigations into the matter continue.
Despite the existence of a video recording, which has not been shared by the Mirror post-arrests, background train announcements could be heard during the heated exchange. The footage abruptly ends, suggesting that the altercation persisted beyond the recorded segment. The extent of any injuries sustained during the brawl remains unclear.
Social media users weighed in on the incident, with one individual humorously commenting, “What in the universal credit is going on here?” Others made light-hearted remarks such as, “Who’s round was it?” and “Trouble at Spoons.” The Mirror has reached out to Wetherspoons for a statement regarding the incident.
This incident follows a separate appeal by the police after a man was sexually assaulted on a Wetherspoons dance floor and subsequently assaulted in Plymouth, Devon. The victim was in Union Rooms when he was inappropriately touched by another man, leading to a physical altercation that left him with a facial injury requiring medical attention. Devon and Cornwall Police have released a photo of a man of interest in connection to the September incident.
