A paramilitary group brandishing firearms has been roaming the streets of Venezuela’s capital in search of individuals who express support for Donald Trump and the US operation that apprehended Nicolas Maduro.
Photographs have surfaced showing these pro-Maduro gangs riding motorcycles through Caracas, armed with AK-47 rifles, while on the lookout for any signs of backing for Trump. Reports indicate that they have been inspecting phones and vehicles for any indications of support for the US intervention in the South American country.
This alarming development follows the Venezuelan government’s declaration of a 90-day state of emergency to apprehend anyone associated with endorsing or facilitating the US-led armed attack.
Members of the armed group, known as The Colectivos, have been photographed alongside Maduro’s Minister of Interior, Justice, and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, who continues to assert Maduro’s legitimacy as the country’s leader despite the US intervention.
In the midst of the political unrest, Cabello affirmed, “The revolutionary force’s unity is unwavering, and Nicolas Maduro Moros is the sole president here. Do not be swayed by the enemy’s provocations.”
Videos circulating on social media depict Cabello with motorcycle gang members affirming their loyalty and opposition to US interference in Venezuela’s affairs. An anonymous individual critical of Maduro expressed fear of reprisal following the group’s actions and the government’s emergency decree.
The paramilitary group has reportedly detained and interrogated 14 journalists, heightening concerns over press freedom in the country. Cabello has purportedly intensified pressure on the military, urging them to retaliate against perceived threats.
This turmoil unfolded shortly after the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse on January 3 by a specialized unit of the US military. Maduro, now detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York City, declared himself a “president and prisoner of war” during a recent court appearance.
The situation in Venezuela remains tense as the power struggle between Maduro’s loyalists and opposition forces continues to escalate.
